BEST LOCATION FOR STREET PHOTOGRAPHY IN BANGKOK

Where are the best locations for street photography in Bangkok? Bangkok is known as an awesome place for shooting street photography and its qualities are often captured through the lens by professional and aspiring photographers, including Magnum photos. With many years of experience of exploring every corner of Bangkok, I have put together a photographers guide to Bangkok in the way of a list of places you should visit when you are in Bangkok. I hope this list will help you find the best spots to capture some amazing street photography in Thailand, also to help you with any safety concerns you have.

HUA LAMPHONG RAILWAY STATION

Hua Lamphong is Bangkok’s main train terminal and is a true hot spot for street photographers. The location has interesting subjects, great light, and architecture, it provides a great place for street photography. There are always plenty of photographic opportunities at or around the platforms of the station as well as on the trains in the platform. Hua Lamphong also has many interesting places to explore just outside the main entrance and is only a short walk to China Town.

CHINA TOWN BANGKOK

Yaowarat Road in Samphanthawong district is home to Bangkok’s Chinatown. Temples, gold shops, and street food are what to expect when visiting Bangkok’s China Town. Yaowarat Road is generally filled with tourists 7 days a week especially in the evenings and weekends. , It always worth exploring the back streets and alleyways to find a quiet interesting area away from the tourists to shoot street photography.

KLONG TOEI MARKET

Khlong Toei or Klong Toei Market is one of my favorite spots to shoot street photography in Bangkok. The market is alive with vibrant colors, energy 7 days a week, and is an ideal for high contrast black and white street photography, flash street photography. Visiting the market will give you so many street photography opportunities if you wait in certain spots long enough and spend enough time exploring the market and surrounding area.

KLONG TOEI SLUM

Khlong Toei Slum or Klong Toei Slum is a district in central Bangkok, long known for its slum. It is bordered by the Chao Phraya River. Khlong Toei is inhabited by 100,000 migrants and is known for its high number of gangs. Street Photography in the Khlong Toei slum is a great experience, although not a place for the shy or timid street photographer. The place is safe enough to visit during the day hours and the people are friendly it may be a different story after dark.

KLONG TOEI SLUM 2

Khlong Toei Slum 2 is an interesting area close to the main slum area. Like the main slum, you are going to find pretty much the same opportunities for street photography. The great thing about this location is that there is Muay Thai boxing school. The best time to visit the Boxing school is between 2 pm and 5 pm the locals are friendly and are happy for you to photograph the fighters.

KHAOSAN ROAD

Khao San Road the infamous backpacker street known throughout the world. As well main street (Khao San Road) it is worth exploring the adjoining sois for great street photography opportunities. Cafes, bars, clubs, massage parlors, street food, tattoo shops, are pretty much what you will find here. An interesting and iconic place to shoot although very quiet in the day. The place comes to life after 4 pm when the lights and people really fill the street.

On the west bank of the Chao Phraya River in Thonburi is the historical small train station named Wongwian Yai Railway Station. The best way to get to the station is to take the BTS Silom line up to Wongwian Yai BTS station. SOI COWBOY

Soi Cowboy is just next to Terminal 21, a very popular shopping mall and is known as Bangkok’s famous red-light district as well as Nana a little way up the road. The street is lined with go-go bars, girls, and the iconic neon lights. Photographers are generally a little shy of shooting street photography around the red-light district of Bangkok but its no problem and nothing to worry about. Although there will all always be people who do not want their photo taken when visiting this kind of locations.

PATTAYA CITY

Sex city or Pattaya has the reputation of the sex capital of the world and it is well deserved, with hundreds of beer bars, go-go clubs, and massage parlors. Like Soi Cowboy, photographers are a little scared of shooting street photography on Walking Street the city’s main area. Pattaya is a great place also for Beach Street Photography. Especially with all the eastern European tourists and expats around the beach area. Avoid the Pattaya main beach and head for Jomtien Beach for the best beach street photography.
